Where to buy on the peninsula

Where you buy here matters more than what you buy. Each of these lives differently, and the price difference between them is larger than the difference between two houses in the same one.

Playa Cosón

Seven kilometres of near-empty sand fifteen minutes west of town. The last place on this coast where land still sells by the hectare. You will need a car for everything, including bread.

Playa Bonita

The established villa beach, built out since the 1990s and maintained rather than flipped. Walk to dinner. Highest price per square metre on the coast, and the beach has narrowed in places.

Playa Las Ballenas

The western end of the town beach, sheltered by the islets offshore. Swim in the morning, walk to the market after. Busy in high season, and the best rental yields in town.

Punta Popy

East of town, where the afternoon wind brings the kitesurfers out. Most of the new condo construction landed here. Best value per square metre — and the widest spread in build quality.

El Portillo

Flat calm water and deep coconut groves, ten minutes from the supermarket. Gated villa communities and parcels still large enough to matter. Essentially no nightlife.

Loma / Hillside

The ridge behind town. Several degrees cooler, the whole bay in one window, and the most land per dollar anywhere here. Access roads vary, and water often means a well.

Las Terrenas town

The working pueblo — market, bakeries, hardware, clinics, schools. No beachfront and usually no view, but the cheapest genuine entry and year-round rental demand.

Las Galeras

An hour east, at the end of the road. Playa Rincón is around the headland. Quieter, cheaper, and a genuine commitment to remoteness.
